It started in the winter of 1968, at Stewart Elementary School.My teacher, a woman named Ruth Walker, said to my mother in exasperation, “Mrs. Gillard, I can’t take it! Whenever I leave the room and come back, he
has the class in an uproar.”·
I was hyper and fidgety, and I was always being sent to the office for being.disruptive. The ‘solution’ was to place me in special education classes. This was special education in 1968, which bears little resemblance to the program today. Back then, special education classes were a holding place for everyone who did not fit into the traditional learning model.”
